Piano & Singing Teacher

Piano Lessons

The average starting-age of younger pupils is around 7 yrs and there is no upper age limit!

Piano Lessons include practical (playing) exercises, selected repertoire, sight-reading, theory and aural-training.

All basic concepts for healthy and expressive piano-playing are covered- for example, sitting posture; arm and hand movements; pedalling; development of strong, independent and even finger-work; finger touch, articulation and phrasing; keyboard geography and so on.

At home, lessons are given on an acoustic Venables & Son grand piano; on-line, students may use a digital keyboard/piano -with weighted keys -if they do not have an acoustic piano.

I teach from Beginner to Advanced levels (approximately Initial/pre-Grade 1 up to Grade 8)

Singing Lessons

I have taught singing to male and female students from 6yrs to 60+++ years. I’d recommend that a good starting age for solo singers to be around 8 or 9 yrs…but this CAN vary, so please contact me if you feel your under- 8 youngster could manage a 1-1 lesson.

I offer technique - (for example, help with correct posture and breathing for singing, individually-tailored vocal exercises, guidance with pronunciation and diction for singing) and tuition in classical and music-theatre repertoire. I will also offer advice on Performance Practice and Style.

In addition, for youngsters (Key Stage 2), I have many shorter, often catchy songs, or beautiful short ‘art’ songs, which are fun to learn and help to develop a child’s singing voice.

Typically, lessons begin with warm-ups (physical and vocal) and technical exercises, with the aim of engaging and often strengthening muscles ready for singing. With most students, there is usually some work to do on learning how to stand correctly for optimal singing and equally, on how to manage breath. After this, students sing the song(s) they have been practising and I offer my ideas and guidance. Most enjoy being accompanied on the piano for some of this time.
